Too bad Graals 3D engine is archaic at best From what I can tell it only supports diffuse maps (and probably doesn't allow custom shaders) and doesn't seem to support very many polys. (Probably doesn't have fancy features like ray tracing either)

This makes me almost want to make a 3D server.

Looks nice, good job. Graal 3D would have been neat.

You have to remember that pretty much ALL MMO's are going to not feature the same graphics as even older PC games. There is just too much to display on a variable level(how many NPC/baddies can the player pile up in one spot, how many players in one area?) that offline games have way more control over.

I know of one that's around the qualifications. Though the game to me isn't very good.

Wouldn't most DS games count? They're low-poly because of their limitations... the only aspect I might say otherwise is the textures, but typically if a developer is smart they'll make the textures as pixel-art to make the texture files smaller and such to run more efficiently. Animal crossing is an example of one of those games that uses 32x32 blocks of pixels its textures(as well as letting players make their own). Again, though, I'm not sure if it's pixel art or not.

I'm comparing to MMO's. Including ones that are like 10 years old.

I know it's a little off topic, but it would be pretty nice if someone could list a few good goods with images for each as examples.

I'm interested to know how applicable the style is, and in extension, how potentially successful.

Afaik, the 3D engine was replaced to work on iPhone/iPod/iPad. Might be better than the old one.

It would be fun to try this on a DS, but so would the normal 2d graal. So I would like this to be a computer game tbh. Just my oppinion though.
Btw, I think the polycount on my character is about 1/3 of the one that was in the Graal3D.

And leaving for the weekend, so I won't be able to work on this untill monday.

Until it either supports bump/normal mapping and things like that or using your own shaders, I won't be impressed. ;(

Pretty sure the 3D engines they're running on the iPhone uses them, but again I say if it was for Graal, an MMO, I doubt you'd be seeing mapping like that in ANY MMO.

Yeah you do o_o You should see bump/normal mapping in pretty much any MMO made in the last...5+ years. It's not exactly an uncommon practice.

Thanks Chakrah!

Btw, normals and bump maps are only used when you want to models to look more detailed.
I just want to use diffuse maps (and alpha maps on some models).
There's no light system in this, the texture would do that job. Just like graal classic.

Thanks guys!

@Fulg0reSama: 2D more hardcore then 3D?! It's more oldschool I guess... But I have done both, anyone can make graal 2d graphics, this is alot harder.

@Luda: Yeah... They look small, I just tried to fit it into the 32x32 frame style as graal.

@12171217: I know, he is too tall, but I tried to make him 1:1 graal style, but it honestly looked silly with a head as big as the body.

You think the character is too tall? Make him shorter if you really feel like it but I think it would look pretty bizarre if the characters were as short as that little table.

No, I don't think he is too tall, I agree, it would look bizarre if he was smaller then he already is.
I just meant that I have made him too tall if you compare him to the 2d version.
Since I was trying to be 100% true to Graal, I'm off.
I figured that it wasn't the best way of doing it when it comes to the character since the perspective on graal is way off.

Graal 3D failed and was deemed an exploration for the company/Cyberjourers. Hell they built it off one of the cheapest 3D engines ever.

Many would agree that they should of spent the time developing/improving a quality 2D server instead.
