When has this ever been the case?

On GK? For awhile kinda. I mean, top-top max stats hadn't really been possible for most the time I played until recently [barring bug abuse] but generally you either had 107 mental or you sucked. Everyone who considered themselves worth something had 107 mental and got all the dias - which I think still remains the second most popular currency next to USD.

Trust me, try fighting a war with 10 or so new, excited, players vs 1 oldbie who's spent the last 6 years level grinding and was around for a bunch of special high-tier irreplaceable items that are downright unobtainable to most new players. It's kind of a one sided slaughter. I don't think many people are going to be willing to play a game for a full year of daily grinding or 5+ years of casual play to reach a point where they don't horribly, horribly suck.

So yeah, making it a challenge to work for stuff does make it "worthwhile" when you actually get it, but it does kinda stifle growth. One of the only reasons why I keep coming back is that even though I'm far from being great I'm still "established" skill wise and "decent" gear wise so I don't have to repeat that soul-crushing gauntlet of getting from "noob" all the way up to "someone of relatively minor importance."
