And for a while it was the next big thing.

There should be a limit on rented server slots to ~5 or less. The fewer places there are for developers to distribute across the more there will be on any given server. All of these nonsensical "under construction" servers just burn out interested workers before they become talented or more capable of pursuing their imagination. They're separated from the community and have less contact with more experienced users. Our important developers are tied up trying to manage their own servers or create fantastic new content.

If there was a solution... a server which can reward developers - effectively maintaining their interest and building a community of talent - while balancing the playing field for regular players. Paying and rewarding developers for their excellence is the most effective way, but the least realistic in the long term. I'm not sure how it could be done, but if someone could figure out a way, I think the results would be fantastic.

If developers earned a percentage of the profit earned from their content being sold in a cash shop it would definitely have the desired effect. Incentive for developers to not only create content, but more importantly, create competitive content.

I'd just like to add that part of the reason I first subscribed to Graal was so I could ride the draisine on G2k1. That was so long ago.

I agree with this. Even if the reward is relatively small, something is better than nothing and it would be a great encouragement.

The main problem with rewarding developers is that the person who would be paying them does not get paid.

For example, I could make a budget for development on a server with my own money. It would be no problem to pay developers under the table for their work (other than that being illegal) other than the fact that I would be ultimately paying for Cyberjoueur's success and benefit and not my own.

Even to pay level designers or scripters something measly like 50 cents per level would be uneconomical. I still would consider doing it, and have considered it.

The system I describe in my post is self-sustaining.

I just kind of don't like that idea personally. A player should not have to pay more than once to enjoy all of the game's content.

In any case, it wouldn't fit on Graal2001. Maybe you could convince me otherwise, though.

I remember when graal went p2p, and I heard all of these great things about g2k1, and then I finally got my mom to pay for an account for me. G2k1 was such an amazing experience.

I never got into Kingdoms (or Zone for that matter) so I can't use those two as potential basis of comparison, but no server has ever given you so much to do. Everything had a purpose. The map was fairly large, but there were actual reasons to go to way-off parts of it. And, it was a fun journey. The day/night system was well used. Anyone who spent any amount of time on g2k1 spent plenty of time outside of that stupid shop waiting for that stupid guy to wake up!

The economy was awesome. And, the market place is probably the best and most successful single idea that graal has had that I know of. It was amazing getting to sell things at your own defined price. There were seemingly endless ways to spend your time with an awesome player and staff base to go along with it.

Unfortunately, I just don't think Graal has enough players to make a g2k1 comeback all that realistic.

Takes time to load the page, but this looks like the very beginning of 2001, from the small update posts it seems like things were added a little at a time, although i'm not sure how often they were added in terms of weeks or months.

Stefan! I beg of you! Give us 2001 back or remake it with the new scrips and graphics of today! Sure the old community left, but there will always be young people looking for a fun new game to play, and what better game than graal 2001!

A great plan of action since the chance is right here for you, make a graal 2001 application for the Iphone similar to the classic one, and find someone that can work on the PC version the same way, this may bring graal back from the edge.

Haha, Elven Lands was so sweet. 2k1 was sweet too. Then Kingdoms came around and half of us just played to make some money off fools who bought items on an online game.

I don't think I once even tried to make a crossover to being human. Bomy from beginning to end, baby, and I had a bomy pet duplicate of myself for the whole ride through (hehe I took a lot of pride in that)

2k1 was cool because you could be the biggest ass on the face of the earth (me in my teenage years), yet somehow manage to get whatever you want from whoever you wanted. I somehow held pretty much every position you could possibly have on that server. I was a NAT at some point and I can't even script a door. Oh and as for the person who made the money glitch....hahahaha those were great times. I'll give you a hint: he had the sweet island house. CS and survivor were some of the greatest events ever too. Oh, and with my sweet talking skills I was able to create like 4 kingdoms which all were disasters but somehow the intelligent 2k1 staff allowed me to do so. Oh 2k1, how much I miss you.

Graal 2001 was pretty cool. It got me through my pretentious roleplaying snobbery phase with only minimal scarring. And it had a train that even sometimes worked. And it taught me the word drasine.

I'm glad to see all of these old familiar names and know that they still check this place every once in a while. I think that says a lot about what the community was like, although I don't know if anyone remembers me...
