Agreed. If you totally disable the playerlist how are you supposed to know who is currently playing on the server? Search every square inch of the world each time you log in?
I do think it would be nice to disable some of the profile options though. I dunno... in the end you could always script your own playerlist and message system... I think Stefan is just worried that people will just disable the playerlist and not do anything about a replacement.
I honestly don't see "phone systems" working anyway. Who really wants to have to find a payphone and pay money to call someone and have to dial the number and wait for them to answer (either their cell or just get an answering machine from their house or something)... People will miss the ease of using a playerlist and private messaging. Phones and other messaging systems inside the game are just novelties in my opinion.
The only useful scripted feature I could think of is a mail system. Then you could send mail to people who are offline and they could do the same for you.
