I believe that is because adults in a parental setting feel they need to have an answer immediately or shortly thereafter. However, this added with the common ignorance of the finer points in today's technologies usually makes them conclude a false answer.
Lastly, if evidence is brought to light disproving their conclusions, most will react with denial, as they will not want to admit they are in a position of less knowledge than their children.
