That's what I was talking about. If your work has no registered copyright, and someone steals it and you sue, you have to prove to the court that you produced the work first. In the case of music, usually one mails a physical copy (CD or tape) of the work and the musical notation (if possible) to themselves. The postmarked date is admissible as evidence in a court of law. Registering for a copyright saves you the trouble of having to do this, but it is expensive.
