^.^ Well, try blender and give it a go, without learning how to create textures, materials and setting everything up, it won't have the same effect as placing darker colors pixels to create a bumpy effect...

But then again you are slightly right... I've taken Algebra and Trig and know nothing about half of the stuff I have studied, same with C Programming and Visual Basics.. I guess it more depends on if you study and keep practicing.
