Question v6: What is needed for release?

For the final release of v6 for Windows, Mac and Linux,
what should be done before the release:
- What bugs need a fix?
- What features or implementations need improvements, and what kind of improvements?

This discussion should be mainly about technically issues, not about server quality, payment options etc. Basicly the question is: what should be done before replacing the v5 download with the v6 download?

I'm sure 100% sure if this is what you are asking for. If it isn't, I apologize, and go ahead and delete this post if you want:

Also:
Could you possilby implement a feature where when you login to login it replaces global images with the correct image instead of an overwrite? That would help a lot.

Have you considered adding something that automatically updates the client and just requires a client restart to switch into the new version? This is what Google Chrome does and it's incredibly useful for pushing out updates. It would make client updates a lot easier to do, and make this switch from v5 to v6 a lot less "big".

I'm not personally aware of any bugs in v6, but there will (probably) be some found in the future, so I think getting a streamlined update system would be a good move.

Regarding other improvements... well, there is a whole section on the forum for that.

I dislike how nicknames and chat are not in bold on the v6 WINDOWS client.

Right off the top of my head:

Sometimes after chatting, when I close the chat bar (with tab) my character will slash.
He will continue to slash if I keep openeing and closing the chat bar.
It stops if the Graal.exe window loses focus, or if I press 's' or type 's' into the chat bar.

If I just press s with the chat bar not up, my character does nothing, he doesn't swing his sword. But then after pressing s the once, I can slash like normal.

One way to replicate this is:
  1. hold down s,
  2. move the focus onto another program (while s is held down),
  3. release s.
Graal won't receive that release and think you still have it held. I have only confirmed this on Linux.

This is even more noticeable when you hold down an arrow key instead of s.

A more advanced PM box/system that Rufus suggested awhile back. Maybe add a YouTube embedded feature too, like the forums have.

There probably should be a smileys menu instead of relying on going to the forums, and there should be a list of features somewhere.

Hmm.. heres a quick example mockup..

The keydown/focus change problem has been reported several times for both v5 and v6

This is fixed in the latest Windows V6 Client (OS: W7 64-bit).

Feature Requests:
- Interpolate Player Movement: Era and Zodiac (Weapon: -Interpolation) have their own scripted versions, obviously if it would be done by the client maybe even make it an option in F3.
- Improve Networking Code: Things like player movement and other changes could probably benefit from being sent to the server via UDP. Re-add P2P (UDP) for UN sparrers.

The tab bar bug I talked about in my post is still there in the latest v6 client, though.

I downloaded the latest client just to test it to make sure it was still there before posting. :P

It isn't fixed in the Linux client. Or at least not on my Linux setup, my window manager is fairly nonstandard so it could be doing something unexpected.

Are you sure it's not a keyboard failure? (Disregard if you aren't using the latest Windows client)

BUG: While testing I found ChatBar opens with TAB regardless of your in Keys configuration.
FEATURE REQUEST: Add a [Default Keys] button in F3: Keys Tab.

Old style playerlist would be much appreciated by the majority, seeing as how most players use it (did a poll on multiple servers).

It'd be cool if we could do something like:

PHP Code:
new GuiWindowCtrl("ExternalExample") {

y 100;

width height 300;

isexternal true;

nativestyle true// Makes it look like their Native OS equivalent.

I'm wondering if doing something like this is possible...having an animated gif of some sort and then setting it's shape or setting the shape to that of the player. An example that I can think of right now are the Ultima and haste spells in FF6.

Not the haste spell, but you can kind of get the idea. The rainbow colors scroll up across the player

Also setting the color of the player...so that the sprites themselves seem to glow a color or other effects to that nature. Like...

From what I understand external windows are redrawn as needed; on Mac, resizing windows is as smooth as native, and typing also seems as fast as native (which is not the case for internal windows).

From the top of my head:

Get rid of the "create window at mouse" stuff for the Graal main window. Let it default to the center of the screen and then save the position and size like the v5 client does it. Do the same for the playerlist (although I believe Tig's already doing it with the one on Login 2?).

I'd also like to see a comeback of palettes (setbackpal stuff, but improved, more dynamic and usable on basically everything that is an 8-bit PNG). This can be so useful on so many occasions. I can't imagine it being difficult to implement, either; then again, I don't code that kind of stuff. Should you implement this, I don't think it'd hurt for it to work with Jasc's PAL files.

This would be awesome. If not this, then I'd like a white-grayish default style instead of that blue GUI stuff.

I remember reading the text not being bold as something it was supposed to be like throughout the past few versions of Graal as opposed to it not being possible due to some technicality, I would actually go as far to say I have a hard time reading V6 text in its non-bold form, I've never had any problems with my eyesight and yet it's as if I have to put in effort to make out different words.

Yes, such as chat, nicknames etc.

Funnily enough I find that GUI text appears too bold compared to how it does in V5.

On Mac, if you have a multi-line "favorite quote" in your profile, it only shows the first line until you click in it and type a character.

Also, clicking "Close" on a PM doesn't always close it. This seems to happen after changing servers with PMs open, especially.

The profile scripts also need to be updated to support the text size changes properly, hell should probably align the whole as well.

All Text Labels on the left just need to be moved over 16~ pixels. Currently Instant Messenger, Favorite Hangout, and Favorite Quote are being cut-off.

Other things I'd like to see with the release of v6:
A clientside player flag we can use to check if the player is currently jumping off a cliff (player.jump or similar). I could really use this.

Also: an outline attribute for showtext objects to easily add outlines to texts. Should either use shadowcolor for the color or add a new outlinecolor instead.

Indeed, outlined text has been needed for years. Graal needs more ways to be spruced up and prettified.

Also: an outline attribute for showtext objects to easily add outlines to texts. Should either use shadowcolor for the color or add a new outlinecolor instead.
Outline colors is quite complex, because we couldn't re-use the same texture for different colored texts. Black and white could work but other things are complex. Often programs just draw with a bigger font behind the current text. So it is possible but will probably not be added very soon.

Also I concur about the windows opening at the mouse. It's one of the most annoying features I've ever seen and has been since it was introduced to the RC.

Not sure if this is really a bug...but if you open Graal, before you log in, you can press f7 and pm people.

If you click 'Profile' it displays your pcid.

Just thought it was weird.

when you open up graal, without login in to your account, you log in with your pcid, until you hit "login", i'm guessing that's how stefan made it the "online" sign instead of a offline one, if that makes any sense.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not. But on the mac client, I can't seem to "copy/paste" anything from the history. This could be frustrating for those who are trying to report their case to a GP, or to others who have a long "For sale" list that they don't want to repeatedly type out each time.

Thank you

more seriously, i just want things more simplistic. the more v6 acts like v2 the better (aesthetically, at least). also, if there is no UDP support, then i believe you are taking sparring and kicking it in the gonads while it's already being raped. it's annoying enough to have to deal with the intentional laggers without using a slower medium for those movements in general

Removal of Graal# accounts. No?

Well how about the player list not moving the icons on the desktop over.

Also, no comment on my previous inquiry?

Seriously though, the inability to copy/paste is annoying.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the community name system, it just needs better scripting support and adoption by more servers.
