They look alright, but the metal texture on the right one looks too busy, you could use way less pixels to get to the same result

True, but possibly at the risk of producing banding. Also, I am not really one of those "use as few colors as possible" pixel artists. IMO, if it takes me several shades of grey to get the effect I want, so be it. I will toy with it a bit more later.
