Re-Add Server Backups

It's ridiculous to not backup servers. Besides the fact that glitches or whatever can ruin the server's economy (or a rogue staff can delete things), what happens if there's another problem like this?

The /global servercontrol is currently not working, but we plan to bring that back in a few days.
Imagine losing over a month of work (last backups for Era are in mid April) instead of just a few days. That would literally make me want to give up whatever project I was working on.

I don't know why they would have even stopped doing backups.

At the very least they should have daily backups for the last 7 days, weekly backups for the last 3 months and then quarterly backups after that.

Yeah, something like this would be appropriate. It is certainly a ridiculous idea to have us create our own backups (most of us do have and make backups regularly but, having another automatic backup is good just in case...) specially since creating backups is a tedious task.

The backups were automatic, he didn't make them manually.

so what's the issue then?
if it was automatic, no manpower was needed to do it, why stop?

The issue was that it made the servers lag, which was true at one point but if I recall correctly it was eventually fixed. If it wasn't, it should just be fixed instead of completely removed.

Or at the very least the backups could be done any time within the 6-10 hours each day that the playercount is minimal. Heck, even if that were done weekly it would be acceptable -- pick a day.

I remember it used to back Era up at around 4AM when the playercount was pretty much null. However, I think they fixed the lag problem over time.

We can make back-ups of the servers all we want but there are things we can't back up that were done in the server back-ups that Graal did. In situations like Era's, they would have been able to restore a back-up of the server to the day before all the weapons and everything were spawned, and restore peoples profiles, including their weapons and everything, so they would not be having to do a possible premature reset.

Bump because I don't want Era to have to roll back four months (to April backups) if a hard drive dies again (or any of countless other scenarios).

Either add a convenient way for server staff to back up everything, including account data, or re-add automatic backups. It's ridiculous and just plain stupid to remove them.

I agree 100%, why take away auto backups, and give yourself more work and stress on your shoulders, Stefan? I'm sure your inbox wouldn't be so packed also.

It's not hard to make the servers backup when the playercount is minimal. Deciding not to do backups because "it lags" is a terrible and ignorant excuse.

Well we always have +700 players on classic iphone
There are several things that need to be taken into consideration: current playercount, number of files (>10 million files), planned software updates, etc. For Era/Unholy nation we plan to switch them to a new machine soon.

You think you'd have it bad if it were on a Euro server? As it stands, it's a minimum 250ms currently. Era and UN on a Euro server, minimum would be like 350ms

Wait, I'm a bit lost here. What does changing era and UN's server have to do with server backups. (and potentially getting them back?)

The fact that if they're on their own machine, they'll be easier to back up without lagging other servers in the process and there should be no reason why at least these two servers could have backups automatically made again =)

If you did partial backups maybe things would be easier to handle.

What I mean is backup the script/levels/etc frequently, and then do the player account information less often.

The current situation of no-backups is terrible.

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Servers can easily make backups of their content.

Account information is more important but harder to backup. The current solution is "scrap all backups", so I think less frequent account backups would be okay in this scenario.

^This is true. Player flags, player weapons, player chests and other general player attributes change on a regular basis and with the frequency of adding and removing of certain flags, weapons and chests a player can go through in a single day, compared to how many times during a day a level has a tile or NPC moved/changed/deleted, the the lost information between the two comes down to the fact that the player, as a single and only entity, will have lost more in say a week.

Not to mention that when you download (or even created) something like a level, the last known "good" version of it would be on the computer (RC Downloads folder) of the last person who edited it.

As for weapons, scripts and NPC scripts and flags, they wouldn't be hard at all to back up automatically even when compiled with player information anyway. Though I've argued that player information is far more important to back up, at the end of the day, automatic backing up could easily handle all of the above areas.

Account data is always changing, and should be backed up frequently.

Scripts and content only change when a staff member is working, and it's easy enough for them to back it up on their own.
