Wouldn't putting a cannon on the front be useless? The only way you could hit them with that is if your going straight into them. Which would make you open for boarding.

You wouldn't be able to board from a smaller ship.
And the cannon in front wouldn't be useless if it has good enough range.
Point your ship toward the other. Shoot. Turn away. All while moving and before crashing.

The ship being smaller, I'm asuming it would be faster? So wouldn't that make you crash too? Even if the cannon can shoot far.

If the big ship turns to the side before crashing (making the small boat hit the side of the big ship), it should be able to continue moving. The small ship should be forced to stop in such a case, but not the big one. The only way to stop the big ship should be from the front.

And I'm not savvy on the physics of this stuff... but I think PoJo is right; a bigger ship could be faster.

Most likely. But the number of sails isn't all that matters. The ship being bigger will be heavier and create more drag. A bigger ship would have more cannons and armour which would make it heavier too. In reality it would need a lot more crew hands, and provisons. Taking those things into account, a smaller boat still could be faster.
