What's your old account? Also tile errors.

Map looks good so far.

You're OneStonedKittah right?

Also, in my opinion, you have quite a bit of errors in your screenshot. The cliffing can be done with a different style, and would give the diagnol parts of the cliff a more fluid motion.

I also seen some tile errors (the majority of which were pointed out by Crono).

You're making some good progress, continue and show us your progress.

Old account is 'Pooka' - I searched for threads I'd started and saw some 4 year-old levels and lolled, I was such a n00b sometimes

I'd be interesting to see an example so I can understand what you mean. The cliffs are a bit of a departure from my usual in that I'm going in sets of two if you can see what I mean. It does make them look somewhat more diagonal, but it means I don't have tile errors along the lines of what Crono pointed out (with the clifftop tiles not matching on one side, yet if it's changed to an alternative tile it doesn't match on the other side, with the solution being to use both in sets of two).

I've actually gone back and redone the double-level cliff joinings with the more correct tiles. I usually don't as I feel it makes it look a bit odd and (as I recall, though i could be mistaken) makes some cliff joins look odd, though I think I may have grown to actually like the look.

Anyway, update for the map with the sort of peninsula bit jutting out as a pointer for where I'm planning to dump a small island

Your preview level retiled in the style I prefer. Is this how you usually tile your cliffs? This style gives the diagonal cliffing a more fluid motion, as I said earlier, plus it gives you more options when you're detailing a level (you can make nooks and crannies along the side of the cliff easier, etc).

Also Crono and a few others dislike this style of cliffing apparently, so don't listen to what they have to say

It looks OK in that screenshot but a huge ass mountain stacked with those tiles is horribly ugly and can't see why anyone would disagree.

The left side is the style I like, the right one is what max and luda are suggesting.

Honestly, which one looks better?

That's exactly how I went back and redid the level as mentioned in my previous post

They are the 'official' tiles for the job I suppose, though I'm not always sure on how they look. I think I'm with Crono in that for a single join they look quite good, though for anything larger it just wouldn't look right, far too repetitive in a contrasting way I think (the tiles are much lighter than the other method, so stand out repetitively).

Anyway, hopefully I'll have the coastal cliffwork finished tonight and perhaps some more of the inland cliffs laid out.

I think the left flows better, but the right one is nice when used tastefully like in the post at the top of this page. And Kittah your map looks pretty good so far, can't wait to see more progress.

And good luck in Japan, I had a Japanese roommate for a while and it was quite a difficult language to keep up with.

If your cliff splits and your cliff is large it would look like the right one in the end. Classic has a perfect example of cliffing at it's ugliest (and yet proper) using those tiles. Thats why I'm against them, they are ugly.

Update!

Finished up the existing cliffs and coastlines. The plateau in the northeast will have at least another level or two added to it, likely with snow at the top.

Anyway enjoy

Yeah, I noticed that after I said 'all of the cliff work is finished' but couldn't be bothered editing the post, it'll get done

Thanks, it's kind of evolving as I go. If you remember the generated map had only 1/4 of it with water so that's a bit of a change. From there I'm just letting it grow how I like it. That's probably why I'll leave detailing until the end, as I don't like adding things in after I've detailed levels... it's not like it's more difficult so I guess it's just an odd habit of mine.

Island added. I may add another smaller one off to the side, though I'm not sure. I'm kind of starting to experience Leveller's Block as such, not being sure of what to add where... I guess I'll let it take me where/as it sees fit

Finish the foresting and get some detail done. I usually get ideas while im doing that for what to add later. Or under the cliff you can add a kind of beach or something.

As always seems to happen, I was interrupted in my work. Suffice to say with moving into a new apartment (ie. not having internet access), starting a new job and having a baby due any week now I was rather side-tracked.

I've been doing a bit of doodling with it here and there however and there's a slight bit of progress... I'll post said progress when I get home. Unfortunately it's made me realise several problems I've created for myself over so long-term a project and I've started something new which will likely sidetrack me even moreso - but now I'm just babbling.
