Playerworld SQL

I would REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY like it if you (Stefan) could allow playerworlds to startup a SQL server for the game.

By that I mean a SQL server that allows the server (though serverside scripting and such) to access a mysql database through serverside functions. And would be nice to add a SQL button to the RC so we can load up a nice.. organized SQL viewer

This would be great for us people that want to use a more advanced item system that dont feel like trying to make an adhoc mudlib.

Anyone else with me on this?

Yes. SQL is just so much better for databases than homebrew solutions

He does not mean that; he means each server having a database or so for which can be used to store data using gscript.

No. Take this example.

A PHP script can connect to a MySQL server and store/retrieve data. What Warcaptain is suggesting is a way for gscript to be able to do that.

Not really to take over the world... Mostly just to be able to do away with nasty string-based items systems, avoid the convoluted mudlib, and also to bridge the gap between the gserver and the web [to do cool things like online stats and web-interface server maintenance, etc...]

It just makes sense to do database work in... well... a database =\

It'd also mean that if you dont know how to protect SQL databases properly, people like me would have a field day running around and changing things.

It does not neccesarily need to be something accesable by any web browser.. (though that would be real nice for web stuff)

But my biggest need is for having a much easier accesable serverside database.

I doubt you would really be able to crack it unless there was unprotected onActionServersides.. but most of mine are very well protected.

The problem is that before we can add this we need to update all machines installing a more recent version of Linux, and install databases on each machine. May be there should also be special functions for each SQL operation (select, insert, delete, update, replace) to have some way to prevent flooding. Question is also how creation of tables should work, or if there should be generic types of tables (predefined columns), but that would take away some freedom. Eventually creation and modification of table structure should be done via RC.

If you made some predefined tables and then allowed modification through a web-based interface and eventually RC, that'd be pretty neat.

I am not really reading anything yall are saying, but with this would I be able to access my server directly via mysql? If so, I can add some modifications to my vbulletin and maybe make some feature where you can only create users of your character or something (on login, you can have up to 3 chars)

Hmm.

If scripts were able to connect to an offsite SQL Server, the need for a strict control system (and consequently, upgrading all the servers) could be avoided, as a temporary solution at least.

That way, people with offsite webservers would be able to utilize an already existing database, and also be able to access and modify the data to do cool things relating to that playerworld's website. (Such as statistics, and character creation, or whatnot)
