I think a big part of it is that people who used to develop for Graal previously did so because it was a community effort. Now Graal charges people to develop and to play, and those people who previously developed have mostly found better things to do (things they don't only have to pay to do, but get paid TO do) with their time, efforts, and talents.

It went p2p more than 5 years ago. I know from the 'old developers' that they understand that we must make money in some ways. There are sometimes discussions about how the trial mode should work, but we also plan to change things for that.

Yeah, the 'old developers' understand, but that doesn't mean that they're still willing to volunteer their time, ability, and funding to this business. The current lack of developers proves this.
