Paladins were holy knights, no? Supported by the church then. I think the church was raking in enough cash from 'saving' the peasents to get their holy knights atleast white robe/poncho thing, if not shiney armor.

I just figured a warrior of god would be more brilliantly dressed.

I think a warrior of god would be more humble, and feel that how he dresses doesn't matter, as long as he fights for righteousness and good.
