Current ship systems allow 3-players to all be helpful on ship. Even 4 if you do things right. One guy pilots. Another guy is lookout. Third guy is gunner. I used to do this with my friends when ship-cannonballs were unlimited and free. Fourth person can cast spells at enemies, try to board enemy ship, or attack them when you "crash" ships.
I havn't thought this out thoroughly, but having a bigger ship may possibly make it so you can have more than 3 or 4 useful hands on a ship.
Maybe make it so people can jump onto enemy ships? (even if they hide the ladder) It would make sense since it is a bigger ship. Maybe make it fail/succeed chance system where you might fall or you might make it (like learning a spell/skill). Dexterity should effect this.
