Many studios are only interested in graduates from reputable schools.

It depends on the industry you work in. If you have a reptutation as a developer it will be enough to land you a good job, of course you'll have to actually be able to do what your reputation has said - that's obvious.

Same goes for illustration (especially illustration), graphics design, photography, etc; they're all intuitive trades.
