I'd like to discuss a possible server
I'm interested in trying to create a new classic server (again). Thing is, I've never had the opportunity to discuss server ideas with people before they actually rented the server space and had begun working on things already. Always thought this was a mistake.
I'm really interested in talking to level designers. I have an idea of what the levels would look like already, and I've played around with the level editor to try and make something like I imagine, but my development skills are seriously lacking. It takes me like 3 hours to get a cliff looking correct and then half an hour later I'll have it all screwed up again. Not to say I wouldn't also want to discuss things with other developers, but the focus point I'm on right now would be the feel of the overworld. So please post or give me a heads up somehow if you're interested. I predict a 0 response thread, no one contacts me, idea dies. |
The server would be classic Right? If so I'm your man for helping you with your levels :)
Even If I have my own server I can still help :D |
Appreciate the interest.
I guess I'll give a small synopsis of what I was thinking of in terms of levels. The goal in mind here is to actually get released, and so keeping it simple is the real theme. I want to make a really small server. Something like, a 5x5 or 6x6 overworld, with maybe 10 or so inside levels. This is why I'd really like to talk to some level designers, because working on something with such a small scale puts a lot of emphasis on how those levels are designed to handle the player's environment. If you've read anything by me in discussing servers before, you'll know I want to make a really hostile PKing overworld, with an emphasis on guild-warfare and PvP. Within the confines of such a small place, with only maybe 2 areas where PKing is not allowed (and no pausing anywhere) those players who wish to start fighting can do so almost immediately because of the small enclosures and close proximity to other players. Working out some way to make deaths feel more significant than just another number to the K/D ratio will also be important, but that's a ways down the road. My idea for the environment I've mentioned is a secluded mountain village. This mountain is gigantic, and the village itself is nestled on the side of this mountain, and the inhabitants have no way of moving up or down the mountain face, though luckily they have enough resources to sustain themselves. I feel like this is a good sort of way to create a story for why the server is so small, as well as allowing us to expand later on with story elements such as, breaking through to a new path, or some new climbing technique was discovered which allows them to move upwards/downwards and discover other secluded villages. It also allows us to focus more on using the level to move players around, much like in RPGs where players have to fulfill certain tasks to move onto new areas. So I hope that will give you guys a better idea of what I'm aiming for, with some specifics. (It's actually what I've almost always aimed for in terms of theme, but never ever got to really discuss with anyone) |
When you wanna make a small rpg, call me ~o~...
As far as making deaths more signifigant, try making a type of bounty system? Either with items or gralats, I imagine keeping your bounty high would make players not want to die and such. Though I'm not entirely sure how you would reward it other than bragging rights. |

But like I've said, it would be something much farther down the road to consider. It's not like I can script well enough to test it out. |

Just to give another small update - because text and images are so valuable and show a projects worth.
This is sort of what I want the overworld to look like. A nice crude mockup with a grid showing the specific levels. Color key: Brown - cliffs Gray - reachable cliffs Blue - water Darkgreen - trees Lightgreen - town area Purple - key building Red - path/road Yellow - blocked off path to new area |
That looks very nice :)
