Playercount doesn't really represent quality though.
When Graal was originally just the Classic server, it had ~200 players. Sometimes 300 on a very good day. When more servers came around the playercount started to increase. Once Graal went P2P everything went to hell and many left Graal and playercount dropped a lot. It's just been downhill from there.
Back when I played Classic I sometimes quested... not much though. Most quests were either broken or full or something of the sort. What did I do? I passed my time on Graal by either PKing, participating in throne wars, or guild wars, trash talking or some other sort of mindless thing I have absolutely no interest in anymore. A couple years passed and I got into development and never played again.
Really, Graal hasn't changed, just my interests. I hate PKing now, I abhor the trash talking crap that Graal had going back then, and I can't stand to really stay on more than a few minutes because I quickly get bored. Of course, this is just me but I think as every player grows up their interests start to change and mature. What was fun for us back then is not anymore, even though it's exactly the same.
I'm not saying Graal is still good these days, but just the fact I think it was just as bad back then as it was today, but it was free so people sucked it up and found ways to enjoy it. Simple isn't always bad, but simple without refinement is. Graal has a lot of potential, but it still, after 10 years, hasn't been unlocked. I think 2k1 was the prime of Graal, but Graal still needs so much more. |
