Being too free with completed items will make people lazy and they won't learn how to do anything themselves. This was meant to be VERY basic, just to save them a little time and to give them something more than a single level of nothingness to start off with.
I agree, it's helped them slightly but not much...

They've gave out scripts, which is good, but they've not gone in to alot of functions which are vital for a playerworld to suceed.
  • player joined classes
  • adding player weapons (how to add a weapon...)
  • connecting to a database NPC
  • connecting to an SQL system (a bank, spar ranks etc)

Although, it's taken a couple of months to create, it's not much at all. To be honest, I was expecting more. Showing very simple ways on how to create scripts will inspire other developers to modify & create their own.

Maybe I'm just too picky?

This starter pack will hopefuly replace the playerworld default files, which is supposed to help everyone renting out a server.

Thanks for this great idea again Jerret.

I'd like to point out that when someone really helpful to a team quit doesn't mean that this team will stop all activities.
We are currently building ourselves a strong headquarter which will hopefuly bring people in and make any of you request whatever you'd like.

All those things will be explained in various tutorials that we could eventualy advertise to anyone renting a playerworld aswell.

That's good, don't give tutorials, add it to the starter pack.

As Jerret pointed out, this is a start. It was never intended to give anyone a full working server from the moment they rent a server. I would hope although I know this is not the case that those that rent servers have some basic knowledge of scripting and the ability to figure things out. Much of that additional information should be documented on the Wiki. Skyld has updated his site with scripts as well.

I guess my question is this, are you volunteering your services Andrew since you're picky?

Ultimately I like the idea, and bravo on helping out new servers. This is probably more useful than the majority of Code Gallery posts, or even tutorials.

On the contents of the package:
  • The graphics are a nice idea.
  • Not sure about the levels since I can't open them right now, but I wonder if there's any use for more than one starting level? They won't actually be able to use the levels as content.
  • Scripts
    • event_spar: I think this is too specific to be included in a base package. It would be deleted by most people.
    • object_chest, object_door, etc (all of the objects): I like these, nice job .
    • shop_basic: A good starting point definitely.
    • -Time: Seems too specific to be included. Probably best to release it in the code gallery instead.

It might be a good idea to include some staff tools. As much as they're frowned upon, it saves server owners the trouble of wasting time inevitably finding/making their own. Just a simple boots scripts would be good.

Also, might be a good idea to include an online level editor.

Nice work, again.

What is wrong with this small level? I actually like this level.

Hi hi gawjus, I don't mind offering a few hours a week, that's no problem.
I don't log on to GDT IRC much, but by all means I don't mind giving a hand if you're going to produce something like this.

I also recommend Rufus as an idea's guy but that's up to you guys

Stefan prefers that ideas be discussed on the open forums by everyone. Although admittedly the starter pack wasn't but then it was fowlplays project before it became a GDT project. Technically Rufus and anyone else with an idea for something useful that can actually be implemented is considered by the GDT. Open discussion prior to making anything though helps work out the bugs on it and see if its something that would actually be wanted in general.

What Bell said - I've been saying this way too much, anyone can contact me anytime to request help or throw in ideas.

Quite a lot of things should be worked on as soon as I finish our headquarter, but I can't say when exactly, I've found myself in the most busy week of my life but things should work out better in a day or two.

Basicly, I'm setting up our own forums which will serve as a help center where anyone can request help or suggest something we could work on.
It will also make it easier for the whole team to keep track of everything. Our subforums here is getting bigger and bigger, and mixing everything is not the best solution (projects, new members, applications)

I'll also note that I pointedly disagree with the idea of us having separate forums. We only need sub forums here, imho.

The levels were pretty 'meh' in general anyways.

Guys, come on, this is all you have to show? I'm not impressed.
