Playerworld Starter Pack Release
1 Attachment(s)
Hello,
This is a small collection of levels, scripts, and small imagery that I hope can replace the single level that is included with every newly rented server. I'd like to thank everyone who helped: Levels - Vima - Imperialistic Scripts - Ben (even though I did his work due to a miscommunication) - Switch for providing GS2 versions of scripts Graphics - Soala (even though I didn't end up using the lantern) Anyway here's the files. Enjoy. Support for the pack will be handled through the GDT, as well as any improvements/update. |
I don't want to sound negative, but is this the project you guys have been working on over the past several months?
|
I like how you mention other people but then say they were basically useless, nonetheless, this pack should hopefully get the ball rolling on the alot of new servers

Looked through it, proceeded to lol.

Since you're no longer with the team does that mean we won't be getting anything new from the GDT?
Also, I was looking at the list of the members and a lot of them don't even seem to log on player anymore Wan Hell Raven Streety (quit) Imperialistic (quit) Jerret (quit) |
A good start. Would eventually hope to see some more things added to this such as scripted "default" movement, sword work, signs, qmenu, weapons, and baddies. That, for a lot of people, would really start off their playerworld.
|
Definitely a step in the right direction. Graal needs more things like this (starting content, tutorials, documentation) if it ever wants to succeed as a development platform.

How about some screenshots/video so I know what I get before I download?
|
Two months... wow.
Anyway, least it's something. Good work guys Wan's doing offline things at this moment in time and Hell Raven works on UN @ Squirt |
It's disappointing how you guys used pure black tiles in the cave openings and door's and such... level makers need to up the contrast/brightness so they can see those errors!
|
If anyone is wondering, the time system works as
Every five minutes is one hour, every two hours is one day. |
Thanks guys for your participation in this.
I've asked that this thread get stickied and I'll see to it that its also put in the Bible. For those that would like to see more things added there is also this train of thought. Being too free with completed items will make people lazy and they won't learn how to do anything themselves. This was meant to be VERY basic, just to save them a little time and to give them something more than a single level of nothingness to start off with. |

They've gave out scripts, which is good, but they've not gone in to alot of functions which are vital for a playerworld to suceed.
Although, it's taken a couple of months to create, it's not much at all. To be honest, I was expecting more. Showing very simple ways on how to create scripts will inspire other developers to modify & create their own. Maybe I'm just too picky? |
This starter pack will hopefuly replace the playerworld default files, which is supposed to help everyone renting out a server.
Thanks for this great idea again Jerret. Quote:
We are currently building ourselves a strong headquarter which will hopefuly bring people in and make any of you request whatever you'd like. Quote:

That's good, don't give tutorials, add it to the starter pack. ^^
|
As Jerret pointed out, this is a start. It was never intended to give anyone a full working server from the moment they rent a server. I would hope although I know this is not the case that those that rent servers have some basic knowledge of scripting and the ability to figure things out. Much of that additional information should be documented on the Wiki. Skyld has updated his site with scripts as well.
I guess my question is this, are you volunteering your services Andrew since you're picky? :D |
Ultimately I like the idea, and bravo on helping out new servers. This is probably more useful than the majority of Code Gallery posts, or even tutorials.
On the contents of the package:
It might be a good idea to include some staff tools. As much as they're frowned upon, it saves server owners the trouble of wasting time inevitably finding/making their own. Just a simple boots scripts would be good. Also, might be a good idea to include an online level editor. Nice work, again. Quote:

I don't log on to GDT IRC much, but by all means I don't mind giving a hand if you're going to produce something like this. I also recommend Rufus as an idea's guy but that's up to you guys ^^ |

Ah- I see!
If you guys are doing another project similar by all means count me in ^^ |
This is good stuff, great too see something that can help new people.

It will also make it easier for the whole team to keep track of everything. Our subforums here is getting bigger and bigger, and mixing everything is not the best solution (projects, new members, applications) |
I'll also note that I pointedly disagree with the idea of us having separate forums. We only need sub forums here, imho.

Guys, come on, this is all you have to show? :( I'm not impressed. |

Nice starter pack. ^^
|
Please realize that the only people that did any work was Vima and Jerret. I created one or two levels and thats it. Don't ever give credit to Soala or anyone else for this project.
And the reason the project took so long, was because lazy worthless members couldn't participate. |

As morally pissed off with coreys as I am still I agree with him. Not about the whole Imperialistic thing (or maybe I do I dunno I didn't read it), the levels are just meh. A 3x3 grid of "bland but okay". The cliffs are nice to a point, the town itself is terrible and the buildings are unattractive. The three bottom levels are essentially just water, aa-00 is essentially just trees and poorly tiled grass, the top levels are water + filler tiles, in that whoever designed the level just needed something to put at the top and had no ideas so they made it deep water, even though its on top of a cliff pouring into a tiny stream, which doesn't make much sense unless it's a water filled volcano... but I digress.
I don't assume the levels were up for criticism, but the package as a whole. The point I'm trying to make (I think), from a levelers point of view, is that they aren't quality enough to just replace the default level. I say this just because you're asking whoever deals with the default files on server rentals to replace 1 level with 9 essentially sub-par levels. There's not really that much incentive, I would think. Also I hope whoever leveled for 2 months didn't come out with these. This is like 2 days work. Just sayin'. |
After reading the first post I promptly skimmed through the remaining pages anticipating the "loljk" part but was a bit disappointed not to find it.
Waste of resources imo, even if only a subset of the GDT were involved. There are several threads in the Graphics and Code Gallery section for free-to-use graphics and scripts respectively. As for levels I feel that, besides the issues already raised with them, that they should be individual to a server and it is rather pointless releasing anything in this dev area. A better use of time would have been to create/expand guides for each development area, and that is especially relevant to levels/graphics. |
Grey,
You should really read what you type before posting, you didn't even make sense. Quote:

It was more like waiting on everyone else to do their part. Don't think anything was really made to be super quality but enough quality to be a base or structure to develop and learn from. |

As a tutorial or an example pamphlet or something, yeah sure they work to a point, but in terms of having those 9 levels be the default on every single new rental server? Not without serious improvement. |
