New Mac version

Graal v3.04 has been released for Mac. This version fixes a lot of bugs, we have tested it several hours on different servers.
Change log (from v3.02):
- faster network code
- playerlist is sorted and non-transparent
- displaying of the classic weapon screen is fixed
- better transparency for gifs
- fixed problems with warping and freezing
- new scripting variable 'gravity' for influencing projectiles

Download the Mac version from the downloads page.

Update: Also released v3.04 revision 1 for Linux and Windows for fixing a problem that e.g. crashed the client when playing on Zone

Why don't you test the new versions when you make them?.. easier then releasing with hundreds of bugs

Because he can't possibly test every environment and test situation. The people are the testers and hence the versions become more and more revised.

You can't expect a 100% rewrite to be completely free of bugs. In this case it's a completely new program. Bugs are a part of software development dude.

No amount of testing is going to remove all the bugs.

Every version is obviously tested, otherwise it wouldn't be a valid candidate to be released for use. If it runs, that's a good enough sign. Find the rest of the bugs and then they get fixed.

If you've dealt with any programming before, you'd know that it's almost impossible to write an entire piece of software and have it completely bug free. Plus, it's common knowledge this client was rewritten in a different codebase so that it was platform independent. This is much more complicated, as most programmers have a hard enough time sticking to one platform, and completely rewriting something in a different language is going to cause problems in the first place.

The original code was delphi. This is C++ if I'm not mistaken.

Mac is evil @_@

Fun Fact:
a 1.8GHz PC (Especially Alienware PCs) runs twice as fast as a 1.8GHz Macintosh.

Graal has been 100% rewitten, from Delphi to C++. Of course we did not code every single byte of assembler code to access gfx cards and sound card, but even when using a good engine there is a lot of work to make things work good. There was no TCP code for Mac, the keyboard handling on Linux very buggy, very limited gif support and no mng support.

Downloading is fine. Running the setup is fine. Just when I start it up. The screen loads for a split second, then quits.

Seems it stops when trying to set the display mode. What screen size and color resolution does her Mac have? The OpenGL initializing code in the Graal Mac version is quite bad right now, may be it works when editing graaldata/client/prefs.cs. You can e.g. set $pref::Video::fullScreen = 1

Well it's much easier to port to Linux or Mac than to port a Linux/Mac program to Windows because of all the proprietary
Windows stuff. Mac is basicly a UNIX/BSD, so we can share code between the Linux and Windows version. Also there is OpenGL (gfx) and UNIX sockets (networking) on all platforms. So the biggest difference in the ports is the windowing system and the input devices (mouse, keyboard).

Hi,

I'm -Gabe- and Evey's friend, my registration for the forums just went through.

She said there is no prefs.cs folder in client, but I didn't get her screen size and resolution, so, I'll find that out tonight.

I hope you can help, I'd really like to be able to play with her. I've some bugs of my own with the Mac version, but I think I'd like to wait to bother about them until she can at least play. Thanks for your time.

I did a comparison between my comp and an Alienware and I found I would have a 500% increase in my gaming performance.

Plus they use Alienware on those TechTV shows etc.

And its not just marketing drivel (need to look up that word lol)
All those people on the list (20+) say Alienware have awsome PCs.

I can build you the statistical equivalent of an Alienware PC for hundreds of dollars less. They are not superpowered computers, they are not made with super ultra parts. They charge you more because you, just like everyone else who buys an Alienware, is gullible and believes marketing hype.
