You said earlier you were starting at scripting basics, then moving up to more advanced things.. those first days would bore the higher levels :P If you plan it out well enough, people would just know not to attend on certain days.
Another idea could be to tell people what they
will need to know to do some of the more advanced stuff math-wise, and possibly give them some websites or something to learn those things from (possibly make a list before the classes even begin to give people a head start)

I didn't have the any clue how long you were planning on making the classes anyways ^_^.. I bet they'll end up being around an hour anyways ;o half an hour isnt as long as you think..
as for IRC being bad for math.. yeah, in some cases.. but not all ;o
