Piety and godlessness

I realize this is a bit of a contradiction, but....

If you have Piety, do you necessarily -have- to choose a god in order to pray and level up in Wisdom? Or can you just use the prayers without either the advantages nor the disadvantages of choosing a god to follow?

Well, some prayers like Holy Word, and bless you need to have a diety.

Right, but for prayers like.... create food, or maybe heal.... do you need to have a deity/use an altar?
