The diamond is embedded in the hilt of the sword and channels the power of the Holy Mother of All Diamonds into the blade or something....... I agree with you. The only real explanation for this is maybe you chip the diamond into lots of small pieces and embed them along the blade edge, but then the image should look different..... blah. Wouldn't do much against armor, either, it'd just break.
