Graphic Programs

I need a name of a good graphic progam. I use MS Paint to make my graphics and usualy copy and paste them over to Ulead Gif Animator 5 to save them as gif files. I can't save them as a gif or png file in paint because it loses a whole load of color.
The other problem is that Ulead Gif Animator's maximum width is at 2000.
I would like to edit some of the graal tiles on pics1.png but I can't open the file because the wdith is larger than th maximum width of Ulead. So now I need to get a program that has a larger width than 2000 if I wish to be able to edit the pics1 and still be able to save it with no problem.

Do anyone know any programs that I can use that can open files with a width larger than 2000 pixels and be able to save them without losing any color?

Ulead Gif Animator is pretty good with making some nice looking text. You can add text on it and be able to add shade to it or use a neon feature that makes it seem to have a glowing border around the words. You can also make the words have a two color gradient that blends into each other.
I noticed that MS Word has some nice text in there. I like to copy and paste them and edit them around to look good.

Adobe Photoshop is the best, and with Image Ready that comes with it, you can do slices and animate and stuff, but GIMP is free...

What I do is open the tileset in MS Paint, then copy the image, and paste it in another window of MS Paint. Then work with whatever I need to there. You shouldnt lose any color info as long as you dont save it using ms paint.....lol.
