Maybe you could eat the apples you farm too.
Like two apples restore one full heart, since they are small.
And you would have to eat them within a few days or they will go rotten.

that idea has its advantages and disadvantages

adv - it would include another food in the game (yes stefan is making stuff eatable)

dis - people like to keep things like apples and pearls instead of trading them into money because you can lose money you cant lose apples

Then make it so that apples turn rotten if you don't sell them, use them for pie, or eat them within a few days. And when the apples go bad they turn green so there is no trading of rotten apples.
