Wouldn't hiding text outside of a 16 tile radius of the player be a better way to do it?

And then just show the little "typing..." icon from iPhone Graal above players with chat text outside that radius, and maybe color the bubble red if their text includes your character's nick or community name?

I kind of like the idea of taking the concept of your idea; use that idea and add upon that towards the chat system itself to where the text fades by distance that way it isn't such a distraction at all.
