Anonymous rep should be mandatory. Be a man and ignore what people say about you, especially on the internet. If you're going to let it get to you, then you're doing something wrong and their negativity has enough merit to not need a signature in the first place.

not when someone abuses it and simply gives you negative rep for playing a game or listening to a song someone doesn't like. (Such as if someone went into that thread "What are you listening to" and then neg reps you).

But that's perfect. And, more often than not, the only reason they'd do that is if they already don't like you. If they don't like you, there must be a reason, which falls back on the "you deserved it anyway".

You shouldn't let some petty thing like people on the internet get to you. Who cares if they suddenly decide you're unlikeable because you like a certain band, I wouldn't like you either if you cared.

I think it should be one or the other -- complete anonymity (no messages either), or automatic signing.

As it stands, people sign all of their +rep because they want it in return, and then don't sign their negative rep because they don't want it in return. Understandable, but if people used negative rep to show when they dislike a post instead of when they dislike an individual, then it wouldn't really be a problem. Nobody is going to go out of their way to get you back for negative repping them if you have a valid reason for doing it (unless they're a total *****, in which case you shouldn't care about it anyways).

I've negative rep'd friends, and I've given positive rep to people I can't ****ing stand, because I'm repping the post, not the person.
