He offered me a percentage of it in Gralats when I initially brought it up adding the items, but those are pretty much useless to me.

He wouldn't pay people real money, gelats should be fine for you, you can figure a way to trade them or use them in the future, not like they disappear.
It's not like hes gonna bother sending checks to foreign countrys or paypal-ing everyone individually. If I was a developer I'd be happy to just receive the gelats. Many people like to develop for free, anyways. its fun. plus gelats would be a lot easier to split up between the staff.

I too agree with that. Initially developers solely chose to get servers not to make money, but to attempt to create a successful server for not just them, but other players to enjoy as well.
