Covering up that detail leaves you with the form and the textures.
If you still don't like it, its probably the textures. Otherwise it's maybe going to be the distortion of the mouth on of the figure?

I feel as though it's a combination of all of those things. The mouth doesn't bother me all that much, but the tongue is a little cheesy and like you say, it is a little distorted. There are various other areas that are distorted too, but I feel as though that is just down to a quick cropping or something. The wood textures used aside from the mid-section don't seem to compliment each other and the colors are very contrasting compared to everything else. The (what looks like a..) bevel effect used inside of the ship wall seems very out of place too. The flagpoles look like woodchip and overall it just feels like a mess to me.
