It's not a matter of literacy.

I always was told Grail, but I've always pronounced it Grawl. It just seems easier to say, especially in English I suppose.

I w1n.
Who gives a crap about Germany.

In Swedish is Graal = Grail

In french is Graal = Grail

I also say "Grawl". But I only do this because I pronounce it the way I do in Swedish. The actual meaning of the word is Grail in Swedish aswell. So if I want to pronounce it in english I would say Grail. Not Graal. Because Graal is not a word in the english vocabulary.

The end. Thank you.

Do you call your mom "mamma"? Probably not. Because you don't speak my language.

Then why the hell should you pronounce Graal as Grawl. If your not speaking french or any other language. When it obviously means GRAIL. In english.

I have always pronounced it "Grawl" because that is what it looked like it was pronounced when I first saw it.
Habit will make me continue to say it that way, even if it is wrong, because it wouldn't sound right any other way.

It's a name of something. Names aren't supposed to be translated. Though often they have been in the past... in our modern-era people are generally more respectful to diversity and accept a name in it's original language to preserve its essence. I can think of some games that are OFFICIALLY translated to an english name for english-speaking players.
Graal offers NO official translated name. Nowhere on the website will you see it officially called "Grail".

I'll pronounce "Grail" as "Grail". But I'll pronounce "Graal" as "Graal" (grawl).
I don't know what your language is, but I'm speaking English.

Also, you were responding to a post where I was simply showing someone else's words. Notice the quotation marks. MY name isn't Kamuii.

I personally pronounce it differently than either of that :O
'Graal' with the a's sounding like the 'a's in '-ack'
It sounds really weird to me if I say it any other way, seeing as I've always said it as 'Graal'. Makes no sense whatsoever but it sounds fine to me

This is my favourite definition of it though, lol:

It really depends on personal preference.
If you translate it (like Laek2007 did), it's pronounced "Grayl."

Basically, people in the South (United States) would use more soft "a" 's, whereas Northerners would use more hard "a" 's.

I live in Texas and instead of saying "Yale University," people say "Y'all University."
North:South
Yale:Y'all
You All:Y'all
Goat:Gowht
etc.

a vowel after a vowel makes the first vowel strong. So Graal is pronounced like grail. See two vowels same concept. ;o

Exactly. So the proper pronunciation would be "grail" and the proper spelling would be Grål.

I found these

The long back vowel aa as in father, park, calm, path was deeper in the throat. The short vowel u as in cut was an unusual sound, hard to describe, not quite a neutral vowel, and very rare in the world's languages. In the modern form of RP these two vowels have shifted and are now effectively the long and short forms of the same ah vowel.

this was taken from http://everything2.com/index.pl?node...&lastnode_id=0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronunc...ng_for_English
look at this site it says a like in father.

it still is properly pronounced as potato, with the A being strong.

ALSO!!! Graal is derived from Grail. In the original Zelda Online/Graal Java program, you had to find the Magical Grails. Which Stefan when renaming Zelda Online had to thing of good title, Which he then transforms Grail into Graal.

when i quited you I wasn't talking about potato. I was talking about the AA is an ah sound, not a strong a. It even says it in those links... and a few others I found.

but Graal is not english it is french or something...

it is French and if my years of french study are good it is Pronounced Grail with a french accent so it may be derived with ah sound, although it sounds more to me like "ale".

I have a feeling this thread can last a long time.
Better that it does rather than starting a new one every 3 months.
Also, someone once reported Stefan saying "grawl" is as close as you can get. Kind of a weird answer... and I didn't see Stefan himself comment on it... so who knows?
Just remember: it's not English. You don't pronounce writing in other languages in English if it's not in English. The confusion is that "Graal" is written similarly to "Grail". Don't let this confuse you. If "Grail" in another language were "Fruid" (I made up a word... i think), and Stefan decided to call this game "Fruid", why would you pronounce "Fruid" as "Grail"?
That's my logic here.
