If you have a 6 year old monitor like I did your graphics end up super bright because even at the maximum brightness your screen is dim.

Yeah. Thats what I was trying to point out. Even a CRT monitor at maximum settings is still darker than an LCD monitor.

There might be some way to combat it by going to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> Color Management
And manually editing your monitor's display colours. But it'd probably be really painstakingly difficult and not worth the effort.
