Are accounts restarted when gold runs out?

When I recently re-upgrade to Gold everything was reset. I was back to level 1 and I lost all my items and money. Like my Egg Rod and Witch Hat that I won in events. Sometimes while I still didn't have gold I'd log on, create a new trial character and play around on start island.. is this why I lost all my stuff?
