Final Graal Tactics

What is Final Graal Tactics? <- Its not going to be named that
Personally, throughout my Gaming Life, which started for me in the 3rd Grade in 1997 When I began playing my first computer game, Graal. I've also enjoyed Tactics games. Tactics games have always been the most enjoyable for me, I've always loved tactics style combat, and the management of units, and equiping them and making armies that even though might not be the most powerful, were still awesome cause I Knew my stuff. So I decided to create Final Graal Tactics. Which I will change the name later to something else when I find out something catchy. Its still a project/proposal and I don't have a team, I'm just doing it by myself in my spare time. Summer is coming up so I'm hoping to get a big start before junior year.

So how are you organizing this? How is it played?
Alright, when the player joins the server, he/she is promted to choose the way he/she looks. This that persons avatar, where all his/her medals and acomplishments are placed. He will be able to dress his avatar in different ways that give slight benefits to his units. It also shows your rank, thus deciding units are you able to purchase from the store.

After this, he is will buy his first set of troops. 5 Units are the max on the battle field. and several units will take up double space. He can purchase monsters, beasts, but many units he/she will find are restricted because of inexperience.

After purchase, He is free to battle, trade troops with others, customize troops, and go questing for medals.

What system are you going to have implace for unit advancement?
There is no unit advancement, Units do not gain levels. However they can achieve experience and gain ranks on their own. However the benefit only makes a small difference. Also, Units can be equiped with special emblems that enhance them, but emblems are difficult to find.

Dude, you haven't covered battles yet..
I'm going to. Instead of in traditional tactics style games, where levels were so important. This will rely mostly on tactics. And unit combos. For example, Nathan has a wizard that takes up 3 Unit slots and decides to use two knights. John, not using his head, decides to take up all 5 on Barbarians and rush the wizard and slaughter the knights. Nathan corners his wizard, and uses the knights special skill. Guard, which reduces successful enemy hits by 75% but the knight may not use any other skill besides guarding for two turns. The wizard then begins to cast from a safe corner and eventually decimates John's Barbarians.

Is that all?
Yeah thats pretty much all, There are tons of other things I'd love to add, but I'd love to just start with basics and work my way to the point where I have an end product, instead of shooting for too many goals. I'd love some help though. Anyone whos interested in helping that'd be great, I don't care who you are, scripter, graphics artist, someone with great ideas. I'm open to anything. Since I don't really talk to any friends from graal anymore I'm pretty much on my own. So please lend me a hand.

Anyway I created a mockup and some tiles on graal, I haven't detailed them, I just created a general layout. I also created a quick knight. This is NOWHERE NEAR THE END PRODUCT. just a quick mockup on how its going to be layed out. Its also missing a system.. and yadada...

Sorry I don't have much to show. I can't post for another 4 hours or so.. See ya.

And by the way, the picture below is of the actual tileset.. not just some copy and pasted picture. :/

Seems very basic, and something to played when you're bored. Graal fits this very smoothly. However, that means a lot of GFX, scripting, and if there is no music for this server I won't play it. Big pumping music on tactic games are key (Add Enter the Dragon MIDI to a tactics game and it'll rock!)

Since we're taking the name, why not take music from Final Fantasy Tactics as well?

I enjoyed FFT, a lot actually. More than some other FFs, but making a clone with Graal's system....I really don't see it being spectacular

We've heard these kinds of things before. There's really no reason for anybody to get excited until we see some scripting.

Now thats cleared up, I'd be interested to see if this progresses. I can imagine its going to take a lot of scripting, and what happens when your wiped out? Do you need to be reset? Who knows? If worked at, this could be an interesting slant on the Graal engine, but as Kai said, many projects like this have failed in the past, and so I'll wait until I see at lest the basics of a working engine.

yeah, Kaimetsus right. I have very little scripting experience, the last time I scripted something entirely of my own was with the 1.28 graal engine. So revisiting things and spending time reading, I realized my inexperience will grant me a lot of road blocks, but hey I have time, I'll just keep working at it and I'll hopefully have something (If not, a better understanding of script).

But with Scripting aside for a second, I've been working on Pixel Art quietly, Practicing quite often, Pixelation forums are down but I Found other forums that subsitute it well, and I'm discovering that I'm getting better and better at GFX. I'm working on making a very attractive tileset, I hope to have that done in the near future. I've read many tutorials and followed their challenges, and then redoing them over and over and trying to improve. I figure thats a good start.

I'm not here trying to make a thread that will WOOO everybody and be like "OMG THIS GUY HAS COOL IDEAZ" I really just want opinions and people who have ideas and want to help me out. I'd love it to find someone similar ideas and we can collab together. But thanks for all Luck, I'll try my best.

Major Update!
So I sat down all today and started brainstorming, as well as working on the tileset I was going to use. I thought about how complicated a Tactics style system was going to be, and sad to say, I was a bit discouraged. But not discouraged enough to change course. I have a new plan.

I'm going to remodel the graal character to use a smaller body. And following your character will be 3-5 little troops, heros whatever you want to call them. These troops you would've bought from the store and equiped with your cash earned from killing monsters, winning tournaments, trade, job, whatever. Fighting will be VERY different.

You see, you don't do the fighting, your troops do the fighting, depending on the strategy you set on them (Passive, Support Spells, Offensive, Defensive) will automatically attack enemies you click on. They will make formations and move around. You're basically a commander while your troops do the work. PvP will be similar as well. However the person who you wish to fight must set hostle. I know this is all idealistic, I'm just throwing out ideas, and I'm liking this one the most)

Details will be worked out later. Right now all I have done is a partially done Tileset. feel free to crit and make comments, I won't be able to respond for a while but at least I can read your comments. I also have two guys in there just for mockup, They are just stuff I found on my comp, they aren't even close to the end product

I'll improve the tileset gradually

The scripting will be muchos tricky. I'd advise that you draw the landscape with showpoly; it's the only way you can realistically make it so that characters can be behind hills, plus it would make the character positioning easier and ultimately allow you to move/rotate the camera. Currently you'd be stuck with solid color polygons, but Stefan has said that we'll be able to texture polys in the future.

Something you might be interested in looking towards would make Graal Classic look. Perhaps make characters that relates to the early history of Graal, as well as the other games of cyberjouer. Such as, a character may be a bomberman... Or another might be Stefan. Or Tyhm, etc etc.

Actually you wouldn't be stuck with colored polygons because they'd look the same (if you're referring to 90 degree angle changes in camera view).

Or am I thinking of things wrong?

How will you be doing the hero-buying? I think it would be cool if you could actually enter a town and go to the ordinary Graal view and talk to people and buy heroes there.

As a second thought, will there be fortresses or towns or something that can be conquered?

I think a person should be able to decide between the position of a character or a commander. A commander would direct the man, though the men would actually have to follow it, and the battle would ensue. Mainly like a guild.

You also could just have a player act as one character. The whole commander only concept seems slightly weak and boring at the moment.

Thanks for the helping hand Kaimetsu, but I'll probably read up on scripting and fool around with some stuff by myself for a while before I ask any questions. I wouldn't want to waste your time heh

Velox, I'll consider it, I'll definately give you the ability to name your characters. so if you want Stefan to be a big hulking Barbarian, its all your choice. But graal style tactics characters, I'm not too sure about it. But it may work, I have to sharpen my graphics skills and right now I'm extremely tired and kinda busy with school so I'll have to find some free time.

Amagius Black Mages with gun skill and counter are one of my favorites. I don't know how I want the system to be. I might not have a commander system at all. You get together with 4-5 of your friends, form a party and you guys are the people controling your own unit. Then its more a co-op kinda thing against 4-5 other people. I probably won't have a leveling system, but a equipment system where you can make your character look different. I'm probably going to end up doing that.

GoZelda All those things will be thought out of when I have a time, but maybe a system where you can go with a group of 5 friends and go to quest mode and find items and adventure where you take towns.

Malinko, XAndrewX thanks for the compliments and support, and yes, FFT is a great game.

Garel You'll probably have yours done first, and seeing as you're probably on the global graphics team and have a lot more experience with graal, yours will most likely be finished soon and have good quality. I actually am pretty excited if you already made a good amount of progress, it'll be fun to see and learn what works and what doesn't.

But just out of curiosity, has anyone played the Unholy Nation tactics game? I was pretty bored and decided to go on graal and have a look at whats going on lately. and I saw they have a tactics event minigame thing, I haven't played it but does anyone have any screenshots?

The Unholy Nation's Tactics game is quite good to me.

It may be simple, but it's the first version of the mini game ever to be made on the playerworld.

It isn't as detailed as your idea though.

How about stopping by and play a round? If you find me, I will sure enough challenge you!

Hmm..
I like UN's Tactic game.
It is pretty cool.
You have characters and different characters have different weapons / vision ( to move distances) and stuff.
They have a few maps and stuff.
Quite fun.
