Everything runs fine for me with or without nicknames, but turning them off drops the CPU usage from 4-5% to about 1% (testing at unstick me where usually a lot of nicknames are drawn).

I really don't know how else to help you, but you might want to check out this thread which applies to dual-core processing. Basically,
