Of course when you log into places and such it can be seen, but you don't openly want your IP to be out there in the open, it's not meant to be public knowledge unless of course you specifically want it to be and have a purpose for it (i.e. ftp)

If your computer/network is protected well enough, well, security isn't a problem. It's not like you can find out a lot of information from an IP address, perhaps a rough indication as to where it is, but it's not like personal information is attached to them on postcards.
