Although you can't really compare a tree to a monkey, because trees are made of like loads of little leaves. In my extremely limited experience, the need for detail can sometimes replace the need for shading and such. Tiny tree leaves are detailed, a spanky monkey with a banana isn't, really =x

Using few colors isn't that hard, it can give a better result in the end than a lot of colors
But you might wave goodbye to colored outlines and stick to the black though ;O
