This only happens because roleplaying pretty much requires several people. And too many people can't be bothered to roleplay, so nobody else bothers to either.

Items and levels have killed wars and replaced them with "OMGOMGOMG HOOEVA IZ LEVL 107 PHIZ ADN HAS TEH LETE ITmEZ WINZ!!1!!1!1111!11!". There's also the staff who think game mechanics = roleplay (game mechanics DO NOT equal roleplay, by the way). And everybody's too busy with item collecting and/or leveling to roleplay.
