Outside Level: Feedback Please.

Well, here is a level I made a week ago, or so, and I decided to post it here so that you guys can comment on it, etc.

I'm not looking for a score so much as an explanation of ways to improve myself as a level maker.

P.S: I know about the tile errors in the right waterfall area, and how the watefall itself is too long.

haunter 07-12-2004 10:13 PM

Personally I think you used a but too much cut swamp, and you used the same dirt tile pretty much over and over... I like to make it completely random. I really like the cliffs though... How they merge. This is the first time I've seen someone use those tiles for what they're meant for. :) Good job.

Edit: One thing, on the cliffs right above and below the waterfall, there are shadows on the north side of that cliff, while all the rest of the shadows are on the south side. Could you not find a non-shadowed tile to go there?

Okilian 07-12-2004 10:35 PM

not bad level, but i agree, those swamp tiles look over done.

Mykel 07-12-2004 11:06 PM

Nice.

But first person to make me an awesome level without cliffs gets a cookie!

Silver Knight 07-12-2004 11:24 PM

No Cliffs???

A level without cliffs?
What is this blasphemy!?

Come on, these comments are nice, but I'm looking for some real constructive criticism here.
Shadowless's post was good, but he'd already told all that to me before.

And if you cant be constructive, then just criticise, it will only make me better, and thus will only mean better levels for people to enjoy.

>:D levels like this make me like the idea that your my LAT Chief ;) good job Saeyn

Mykel 07-13-2004 08:58 AM

:O!
I noticed tile errors in the waterfall, the top before it dumps down.

I circled some flaws...

1) the sand is too plain
2) you use those tiles a lot...
3) again, to plain sand
4) don't use the long grass that much and so close together...

JohnnyChimpo 07-19-2004 07:16 PM

Theres alot of half-grass tiles in there, i dunno if you consider them a tile error or if thats a style but it doesnt look to good in my eyes.

Cliffing isn't hard at all. Once you've done atleast 5 levels of cliffing, you've pretty much got the hang of it.. I can make a level of cliffs in around 5 minutes, I made one just last week for my friend Aly (Ducati) so she could attempt some cliffing..
I can help you I guess, if you ever need help in cliffing. Y'all know my AIM / MSN? :
AIM : prxir2
MSN : [email protected]

As for the level, :
I like the level, nice use of cliffing, I must say, how long have you been leveling?
Now, for your path, fair enough, it's good. But minor adjustments like in attachment one ( VV ) instead of using the ones you used there, try using the ones on the cliffs, makes it look more 'better', see attachment two ( VV ).

The shadow tiles, no no no!, your shadow changes, try to keep it all the same size, atleast then it might look realistic.

A few tile mishaps on the waterfalls, if you want a perfect waterfall down some cliffs, just goto the waterfalls what are allready produced.. You don't have to make something tile by tile when it's allready there..

If you got rid of the half grass, and made the detail a bit more better, the level would be great, as of now, I'd currently rate it as 6/10. Goodjob, I'd like to see more of your work, keep posting ;)

kabouter 08-05-2004 12:58 PM

Its good, only I don't like the sandpath! 6.5/10

Dach 08-05-2004 01:25 PM

why does the cliff's shadows suggest different angles of approach from the lightsource at various points in the level?

Just because Shadowless stated how you over used the swamp tiles doesnt mean we cant comment about the same thing.Maybe we have the same opinion ?

OasaTor_PK 08-28-2004 03:43 AM

I love your cliffs, but as I saw from the previous post, mix and match some of the dirt tiles. Be creative with them.
9/10 on cliffs
6/10 on detail
15/20= 75% Nice Level. needs some different dirt tiles.

If you have the same opinion, and it's already been stated, what's the point?

Uh no, mountains take skill to make and yet I dont think that the level is great. Just average.

I think, that realistically, those don't look like real mountains, but that's me.

Anyways, what is basis for a "10" level? What makes a "1" level? I want to see the epitome of "10" soon, as I've never seen it.

Personally I judge by the attractive ness of the following, should they be present and/or missing-

Detail
Path
Water
Cliffs
Trees
Transitions (water to dirt and so on)
Buildings
Use of NPCs?
Sometimes use of lights

I dont think i've ever given a 10, then again all my levels get are between 6-8's x_x

MysticalMatrix 08-31-2004 07:08 PM

Nice work, try not to use that many swamp tiles next time.
Also scatter out those trees =P It might look better, dunno just a suggestion.

Goodspeed 09-01-2004 03:41 AM

I like the trees, at least most of the levels aren't forests like SL2's were. However, the use of stones and mushrooms take away from the mobility factor, as their existance is one of my banes.
