Weather on graal 2k1?

When I saw a preview of it there was all sorts of weather... like Rain Snow Cloudy days etc.

vergil 03-12-2001 05:25 AM

snow and clouds would be cool, but clouds probably won't move because it may cause loads of lag.

GreenNamesOwnz 03-12-2001 05:29 AM

Well, in the version I saw, there was NO LAG.
Though it was on offline mode, but when I looked @ the script it was something new.
Dunno.

Lion'el-Jonson 03-12-2001 05:32 AM

hmm

Rain would be pretty cool, and you could catch colds or tuberculosis and die.

vergil 03-12-2001 05:33 AM

actually the clouds test didn't move. It was just a basic random-placement array (i believe :D)

Tyhm 03-12-2001 05:49 AM

Babord

I offered Stefan the script, he never responded...

I made a pretty spiffy Snow too, affected by wind and everything...it was for someone else's project though. Still my script. I dunno.

vergil 03-12-2001 05:50 AM

Maybe lag is a major worry with weather.

Hawk 03-12-2001 12:30 PM

MAJOR

MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR......worry

Crono Illusion 03-12-2001 01:27 PM

It wouldn't matter to me, because my video card is incapable of viewing the effects anyway.

FatherDante 03-12-2001 01:28 PM

Weather shouldn't cause lag because it's not transmitted, it's just an effect. It may slow down machines though, if they don't have a good graphics setup.

Lycia 03-12-2001 06:10 PM

I seem to recall a "snow" backpal being on a server somewhere. I just can't remember which one.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 07:47 PM

Weather effects sholdn't be that hard, just make an ani gif big enough to fill in someone's whole screen, make it only show up while the player isonmap and make it show locally for each player, and then you've got weather. Well, there is of course a bit of messing around with random chances

Lycia 03-12-2001 07:51 PM

Errrrrrr, no.

PACHUKA tried rain in his Dark Woods, and it failed miserably. It was laggy as hell.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 07:56 PM

showimg rain shouldn't be laggy, it should be about as laggy as seteffect is ^^

Fai 03-12-2001 07:57 PM

But what about clouds and fog and snow and floods and blizzards and fires and earthquakes and mudslides.

Lycia 03-12-2001 07:58 PM

Try it. Make a huge animated gif of rain, tile a level into a forest, and put that in there coupled with dusk6.png for a backpal and see how laggy you get.

Fai 03-12-2001 07:58 PM

Do you not need backpals for cause the Seteffect thing?

Lycia 03-12-2001 07:59 PM

No, backpals are set using setbackpal.

Fai 03-12-2001 08:00 PM

but they do the same thing

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:00 PM

I wouldn't know. I've never used seteffect;.

Fai 03-12-2001 08:06 PM

I have and it does like color stuff like what night day stuff is.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:08 PM

I'll try it in my method together with night.gif (That's pretty damn big), and as for seteffect, you on't need to use backpals if you use seteffect seteffect just allows you to give a number of RGB values and an Alpha filtering value, you've got to use values between 0 and 1 for all the thing in setefect though.

Fai 03-12-2001 08:10 PM

they should tell you that because I spent an hour trying to figure out why it was all red.

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:10 PM

Heh, well, I just find:

if (created) {
setbackpal dusk6.png;
}

. . .to be easier.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:12 PM

Heh, well with seteffect all NPC's and players get other colors as well, although I have to agree that in certain cases setbackpal can be necesarry (Tyhm's moon anyone?).

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:13 PM

Tyhm's moon is the winner.

I love that colour effect he did.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:24 PM

Yeah, that is what they should use setbackpal for on pay servers ^^
And well anyways here's a non-laggy (for me at least) whole level filling night.gif thing, with time built in, although it looks lame because it uses night.gif ^^

Fai 03-12-2001 08:26 PM

There's a problem with making a big rain image over you:

When you walked the rain would follow you and it wouldn't look right.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:29 PM

True... Well Tyhm has managed it quite nicely in Babord I think, maybe just making it dark and randomly making some kind of raindrop like tihng appear on the ground would work, with occasional flashes of seteffect 1,1,1,1; in between it so that we'd have lightning.

Fai 03-12-2001 08:29 PM

HOW DO YOU GET TO BABORD I SPENT LIKE 400 HOURS LOOKING

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:30 PM

Don't ask me.

I haven't been on the classic server enough to learn the new quests.

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:32 PM

You just either use the airship, or you go to the gnome's house, do the new gnome's quest and you'll go there automattically.

Fai 03-12-2001 08:33 PM

I am going to go try that.

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:35 PM

Bah, I'm happy on Aramech, Bravo Online, G2k1, and Elven Lands. :)

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:36 PM

I'm happy on offline level designing and NPC Scripting and posting here ^^

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:37 PM

Noooooooo!#!@#@!

The offline server has corrupted administrators!

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:40 PM

WAAH!

You are calling me corrupted :(:(:(
Well okay so I do walk arond with a level 40 sword and a level 40 shield and 20 fullhearts while being invulnerable and being able to walk through walls but that's just a minor detail ^^

LOL, I just got an error that I used too many smileys ^^

Lycia 03-12-2001 08:41 PM

Toldja! Hehe. ;)

greezi 03-12-2001 08:44 PM

Nah, X-Online is going to be leet! I cannot wait to play on it :D

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2001 08:45 PM

Heh, I forgot to mention my level warper in there ^^
And just because i'm feeling like doing so I'll now post the script of my personal version of the admin boots:
NPC Code:
// Antagos Sky Dwellers (Edited by Grim Squeaker)
//
// ================================================
//
// Changes: The NPC now uses keydown instead of playersprite and playerdir.
// You can also if you press and hold 'A' you'll walk at
// normal speed. (Only works when NPCW is active)
if (playerenters&&!isweapon) {
if (hasweapon(Sky Dwellers)) {
hidelocal;
dontblocklocal;
}
else {
showlocal;
}
}
if (playertouchsme&&visible) {
toweapons Sky Dwellers;
hidelocal;
dontblocklocal;
}
if (weaponfired||firedonhorse) {
if (this.active=0) {
this.active=1;
timeout = 0.05;
setgif flyboots.gif;
}
else {
this.active=0;
setgif flyboots2.gif;
}
}
if (timeout&&this.active=1) {
if (this.mode=0) {
if (keydown(0)) {
playery--;
playerdir = 0;
}
if (keydown(1)) {
playerx--;
playerdir = 1;
}
if (keydown(2)) {
playery++;
playerdir = 2;
}
if (keydown(3)) {
playerx++;
playerdir = 3;
}
}
if (keydown(6)) {
if (this.mode=0) this.mode=1;
}
else {
this.mode=0;
}
timeout = 0.05;
}
