It was a sign-up bonus, and got you weekends on Gold servers as well as in the VIP guild. It also got you access to that other MMO that they made that closed down. It's gone now though so doesn't really matter.

In retrospect, the owners should have been less weary of introducing policies on time-sensitive basis.

If they weren't sure VIP would be a raging success they should have introduced it for a limited time to gauge the effect rather than reel the poor customer out on a line - getting all they could - only to sharply haul them back in later on.
