Couldn't connect to the server

Alright well Graal was working fine yesterday; however, today it seems that I cannot connect to the login server. Every time I try to open Graal, I get a popup message saying "Couldn't connect to the server." I am also not able to connect on RC. I have tried restarting my PC and re-downloading Graal. Nothing so far has worked. Any suggestions?

Unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of your computer for about 1 minute and then plug it back in. If that doesn't work, restart your router/modem.

If that doesn't work, click start > run > "cmd" > type "ping 208.43.91.125"

If it times out or is denied, contact your ISP.

Unplugging the Ethernet cable did not work. I can't restart my router/modem because I'm in the dorms and using the school's internet. Tried the run command and it did not time out and wasn't denied.

Is this your first time at university? If so, Graal is oftentimes found to be a P2P filesharing problem (hence the reason I have to use a VPN to connect to Graal). This has been a problem for many people who are in our situation. However, try these commands in CMD.

ipconfig /flushdns (assuming you're using windows)

See if this changes anything, I've sometimes had some conflicts with Graal servers and the DNS cache.

Contact your school's technical staff and tell them their firewall is blocking one of your programs. There may be some procedure to get you or the program whitelisted, or if not, they may just do it if you ask nicely.

I've been in the dorms for over a week now, and I did not have this problem until today. Tried the commands and still has not changed anything.

I am assuming your university may have added it to a block list of some sort or has installed some new packet filtering software. Probably follow WhiteDragon's advice.

When I contacted my University I asked them if they had blocked certain ports on the network and they thought I was talking about the ethernet plug-in ports on your wall. Then they told me they would have to change the entire system to get it to allow me to use my program. I told them "it's for work" and they told me "you're only supposed to use the network for school-related activities." Great tech support!

Now I am basically paying to constantly connect to a VPN in Europe so I can connect to Graal.

Ouch. I imagine you were talking to some random tech guys who don't know much about the network. You should have pestered them until they forwarded you to the guys who actually know what they're doing.

I work at my university's IT department and we have procedure for all this stuff. We are pretty liberal about what people can do as long as they aren't using extreme bandwidth or doing something illegal.

It's definitely worth a shot at least.

Nope, one of the head tech guys came out and is the one who said "you're only supposed to use the internet for school-related activities."

Saddest part is that this is a school that's well-known for its technology/computer degrees.
