In general, it is useful whenever you want to make a point in the first post of the thread so people will see it.
I think the circumstance of someone changing their post maliciously would be much more isolated than one of someone changing their post in order to benefit readers.

I don't know personally, but if that's true than perhaps long-term editing should be allowed in the scripting section. However, for the rest of the forum or any other forum, long-term editing should definitely be disabled, with a limit of ~12 hours.

Yea, but because it helps communicate clearly it becomes an important part of the archival process (which occurs naturally on these and most other forums).
