Indeed—I have a cheap (at the time) eight-year-old laptop which runs Graal fine. The performance problems experienced by lots of players are probably compatibility issues which Stefan really needs to fix.
I think horrible hard drives also play a roll, or oversized Graal folders. I was losing performance on a normal 7200rpm drive because my folder was too big*.
My mom bought a pretty cheap laptop a few years ago (against recommendations) that can barely even run Facebook games. The low budget laptops are garbage.

Surely it has more power than an iPhone 4, which can run Graal. Isn't the iOS version of Graal basically Graalv6 with a reduced drawing size? Unless it's one of those ultra-thin PUT-ALL-DAT-PRESSURE-ON-CPU type of solutions then I can understand, but he did say he spent $700 on it so who knows.

The OS X version of Graal (which the iPhone runs) runs extremely well compared to the Windows version on the same hardware. I think Stefan has done a lot of optimizing for iPhone—it helps that hardware compatibility is less of an issue, too.
iPhones performing better than Windows players on superior hardware is not unheard of.
Graal version. 5.12 is the current version, anything past that is a v6 beta. The particle engine was improved significantly in the v6 beta, which accounts for some of the FPS difference.

Some? You mean all of the FPS difference. If only v6 was more visually refined. ...
Hmm well I just don't know why text or being in normal screen would effect my first-person lag. If I am in full screen with or without text i run significantly faster than being in normal mode with or without text. However full screen with no-text runs like my old computer did, so clean and crisp. Other games lag pretty bad too, so it's just not graal... minecraft, combat arms, runescape, and some other multiplayer games lag like crazy.
However when it came to combat arms I ran this program that closed all programs on my computer at the time and that stopped the lag, however it didn't stop it for Graal.
