sparring on unholy nation is becoming more and more worse as the days roll on, both with good sparrers quitting and new sparrers not wanting to try. UTC & TTUTC are only a monthly event, and do not satisfy any incentive to spar. the ranking system, while good in itself, is not enough of a motivating incentive to spar either, especially because it's more based on the amount of spars, not whom you spar, or at what rating you achieve, or how many tournaments (little in amount as they may be) you win.
the solution, in my opinion, would be to start up a dedicated "UN leauge" of sorts in the main hall of tcspar - the above level which is only really used for it's 3v3 and 4v4 rooms to the right of the spar in there. not only will this use the space in tcspar more efficiently, it will also make more players want to spar.
the leagues can be run a couple different ways, by a couple different people. while i do stand up to run any of these leagues since it was my suggestion, other ways to operate them would be by spar mod, or by some other staff that UN deems fit. as long as they can run it on time, and run it well (which would be a first for almost every single league started on graal).
formats can be tricky, and there are a few options:
- a random tournament setting, players are placed among a roster at random with any byes given at random.
- players are placed in tournament style based on their ranking/rating, byes given to the first and second seeds.
- round robin, with the winner being the one who wins the most matches, any ties can be treated as a finals match, byes given at random (or by ranking/rating).
i think that, honestly, all of these formats should be tried, but each of these formats have their drawbacks. different divisions can have different formats of play, perhaps decided by vote of the entire division.
divisions are pretty easy to make up, just picking out which divisions to host will be vote-worthy. we could also rotate which divisions are held during which months. divisions could be something like:
- singles
- tag-team
- doubles (different than tag-team in that both players are in at once with tags on)
- teams (captain registry followed by tournament followed by picking teams of 3-5)
- guilds
- servers (could be interesting if done correctly?)
my vision for the leagues schedule would be a two-three day a week period of hosting two-divisions per month, depending on how many entries. times can be arranged to fit players schedule, but not showing up to a round in 5-10 minutes would result in a default.
now, if implemented, the main hall of tcspar would have to be re-leveled a bit, with added scripts to help operate the leagues. these would include:
- a lockable door to the entrance of the main hall (or at least some closed off room so that players can spar and not complain about lag).
- a way to disable/enable swords very quickly (hot keyed button preferably).
- a way to put players into and out of the spar (because spars with doors only leads to idiots running into the spar).
- a way to remove and/or ban players from the room (at least while sparring is going on).
- some sort of interface to show the process of the league, and maybe the current spar taking place.
what do you guys think?
