As far as I know, only the running of older servers is illegal.
I have a copy of 1.4 I believe, I play it with my brother/friend occasionally. I think I may get a gamepad so we can all play it (3 people on one keyboard is icky), as it's quite fun to run around and take all the good items and then stalking them
