That's the thing... the old trial system(minus the ghost, I emphasize this) did what it was supposed to -- gave players a preview of the game. The observer system does the same thing, but on a much more illogical level. All it does is benefit those who have the patient to wait(and there are a lot of people that will do anything just to get something for free), and annoy the hell out of those who don't. Not only that, it adds a whole dimension of complications with scripting, and ends up having its own dedicated time for debugging -- pointless.

Simply having a system that didn't save(but again, leave that ghost crap out of it... it was broken and really unnecessary) gives players a chance to see what they're getting. Add in a timer that disconnected them after a few hours of straight gameplaye(regardless of idle or not), to avoid people from idling and losing data, and you've got yourself a very simple, but effective preview system.
