Gmaps don't lag me at all... And on normal maps, NPCs dont load until you enter the level, while GMaps load all the NPCs in the levels around you, so you can see them right away. Plus you can do alot of neat stuff with GMaps scripting-wise that you can't without a Gmap.
To put it simply: Gmap > no Gmap
