Would you make your server gold?

If, by some miracle, a server actually got finished and was ready to be released to the public... Stefan came to you and offered to put your server on the gold list -- would you?

Now, I'm not exactly sure what that entails, but I know for sure Zone was a player-server until Stefan put it on gold. I don't know what the circumstances are, but I'm sure you can guess for yourself what would happen.

Pros -- Your server most likely gets a lot more popularity for being 'gold'. Perhaps you get a percentage of cash for the people that upgrade to play your server? Gets a lot more support from CJ... perhaps any scripters you need, most likely any graphics artist, level designers. Simply, gold servers tend to get the best help. Hell, GK has a whole MUD system just for GK. If you REALLY need it, Stefan will most likely try to get it.

Cons -- Stefan gets the final say on what happens. It's no longer YOUR server, to be exact. Perhaps you're still manager, but you're no longer owner. People have to pay to play, which may stunt population drastically.

These are my personal pros and cons, but I just thought I'd throw them out there in case people are wondering.

So, would you?

excaliber7388 08-01-2008 06:59 AM

Nope.

Draenin 08-01-2008 07:06 AM

Gold servers now seem to be taken over by administration and then abandoned months later.

Twinny 08-01-2008 07:18 AM

No.

Getting gold would be pretty much handing over your remaining rights. For this reason, i probably wouldn't go beyond hosted.

excaliber7388 08-01-2008 07:21 AM

Classic is free though. I would have liked that :p

cbk1994 08-01-2008 07:25 AM

Yes; I think it would still gain enough popularity. Even if I'm handing over control of the server (or in this case, Jave is handing it over), we will always know we created an excellent server that managed to make it gold.

However, our server won't make it gold as it's too close to Zone (I'm not saying it's at all a clone, however, there is too much in common).

notoalpena 08-01-2008 07:52 AM

No.

napo_p2p 08-01-2008 08:11 AM

If CJ really wanted to make my server gold, then I wouldn't have much of a choice...

Which is basically what happened with Zone.

Crono1508 08-01-2008 08:30 AM

I was always curious about this too.
I thought Zone was a Classic server in its early stages.

Stefan decided to take control and made it gold? Weird.
Isn't that basically taking 100 USD out of the owner's pockets?

Twinny 08-01-2008 08:46 AM

I thought Zone was abandoned. Stefan found it, fixed it up then released it :o

xXziroXx 08-01-2008 12:50 PM

I'd like to get Stefan's own comment on this; is anything like this even possible? What's the cons and pros? Etc.

I'd like too.

And no for gold
I think GK and Zone represents what is the best for each theme, Medieval RPG and Modern.

But still, it becomes boring once you are at a good lvl and got a kingdom+ a house.
Classics are still more fun.

Getting gold obliges you to change your characters no ?
Like you need GK/Zones bodies and heads ? Because others are classic tho.

And no, getting gold probaby gets you lot of players for a week, and then people go back to classic because gold is expensive (well not with that new subscription system anymore, but if you got classic unlimited, its still better :p ) Or else, if players stay on it, it has to be SUPER COOL EXCITING LIKE OMG !

But still...I'd rather become classic :/

Spark910 08-01-2008 02:24 PM

I honestly couldn't see a reason to do it. I'm sure the better option is always going to be classic. Unless you made some sort of agreement where you got a % of subscriptions!

I remember Konidias wanting to make one of his worlds Gold (or maybe 2001 too). While it's nice to support Graal and try and get it more money, I'm sure it was more because he felt the average classic player should pay more to play it. Which is fair enough, but it's a big risk if no one wants to upgrade as your playercount will be low which could result in a boring time for those who do play it, resulting in an early death!

Gold servers weren't always desolate :P
Servers like 2k1, and even GK(when it was 2k2) were popular for a long time, and held large playercounts for a while.

I was here that time =D
This is pretty why I've been playing GK only for 4years.

If there was a specific list of extra things you get for making it gold, then maybe. But it'd have to be very high standards and a unique idea :noob:

Soala 08-01-2008 02:44 PM

WHO VOTED YES ?!

Lol even if I make money by getting it gold, I'd want it classic..idk...
Depends on how much I'd get o_O

Crono 08-01-2008 03:37 PM

Yeah, if I wanted a stable playerbase of 10.

Galdor 08-01-2008 03:57 PM

I voted yes... why not? ^^

Agree'd anyway XD

Angelu 08-01-2008 04:27 PM

stay classic and sell items, outfits and whatever for rupees :O
you get money and have a good playercount ^^

Darlene159 08-01-2008 04:52 PM

I wouldn't simply because I prefer classic style.

DustyPorViva 08-01-2008 05:03 PM

Classic style?

Door 08-01-2008 05:10 PM

I wouldn't be able to make my server gold in good conscience. I would feel guilty making people pay extra for it.

Being serious doesn't help xD

I like old style, classic style.

It's not gold servers that are causing the bodies

However, a server like Graal Kingdoms wouldn't look very good with classic bodies, especially since there is so much stuff you equip (shield, sword, armor, amulet, helmet, mask, clothes).

Zone seems like it would be weird with classic bodies as well. However, I seriously doubt that if Stefan wanted to make your server gold that he would make you use custom bodies.

I know that, but that is the style being used on gold.
I doubt if anything "classic" will ever go gold.
I mean, old classic style, not upgraded.

I kinda like a mix of the two. You probably dont get what I am trying to say.

I wouldn't want the stress to keep up with updates, to keep it fresh and fun in order to keep it on the gold tab.

RosesLove 08-01-2008 10:26 PM

No, even if I got a % of subscriptions I probably still wouldn't do it.

I'd rather see the server getting put to use than go dead within a few months.
It'd be flattering for him to offer it though, haha.

Even more so since I'd be able to brag about rejecting his offer. ;]

Frankie 08-01-2008 10:26 PM

From what I remember, Zone was private for a while. It went classic and for some reason, Delph (pretty sure he was the owner) wanted to get rid of it so he deleted it. Stefan globally banned him for that, took Zone and made it into a gold server.

I remember seeing his global ban reason posted on the unofficial Era forums ;o I could be wrong.

Even if your server goes classic, technically it isn't yours anymore, right? I mean, all these people that created these servers and paid for them when they were private don't own them now. I'd much rather it be classic over gold though, because more people would play.

Xterminator 08-01-2008 10:43 PM

Nope..

Dell, not Delph.
Stefan basically took over the server while he was still developing it, hired Angel and a bunch of other people that changed the server from what Dell, Morgoth and Blookat had originally planned.
Dell decided that he didn't want his work to be used for that, tried to delete it, and he got globally banned for it. His work was restored from a backup and Zone was released a short while later.

Crono1508 08-02-2008 12:00 AM

I agree with Moonie about the classic style.

I really don't like the use of custom bodies.
I like how Graal Classic bodies are designed to be honest.

Meh, I think Stefan re-scripted everything with some help from Jagen.

I had forgotten about this. Which makes it slightly more interesting that Graal Zone is being used to represent Graal on itouch !
